[ARCHIVED] When adding a student to a course , how do I assign their role as student?

When I added a person to Canvas, and wanted to assign their role as student, that option was not available in the drop down menu.  Would I assign them as a "participant.?"

Hi,  @bajohnso1  Welcome to the Canvas Community! "Participant" is not a standard role in Canvas, so it is possible that your school has customized its roles in some fashion. Furthermore, not every school allows teachers to add students directly to courses—as they manage those enrollments on teachers' behalf—so please ask the local Canvas admin for your school for assistance with adding users as students.
