1. What is the point of 'pages' if you already have a homepage?

Great question!  The "Pages" index page is where you can create all sorts of content for your course...mainly for informational purposes such as activities or other relevant information you want students to read/know about.  You also have "Assignments", "Discussions", and "Quizzes" index pages, but those are used for other purposes.  So, when you build out the layout of your course via your "Modules" index page, you can place many pages from your "Pages" index page into your modules so that you have content there for your students to read.  Here are a couple video tutorials that may help:

I'm new to this, and although I understand computers and can even manage the PD assignments I still do not understand the necessity of pages. You say I can use "Pages" for my students to read content, but wouldn't it be easier for my students to manage and understand their work if the specific content is attached to the assignments?

Tiffany, Pages are quite versatile. They can be a handy reference outside of assignment instructions—and oftentimes, assignment availability is limited to a specific date range, whereas pages can be referenced any time. When I was teaching, I set up pages containing relevant content for the subject matter of the module.
