I don't know whether you ever found the answer to this, Patrick. We've recently had the same thing, but in quizzes, where students from China gave their answers to a text entry question in English script but when the tutor looked at it (and when the student looked back at it) the answer was presented in Chinese characters.
If anyone in the community has any inspiration or insights into why this has happened (and what we might do to help students avoid it), that would be much appreciated.
The same thing has happened to me!
Same here. My support colleague Dina suggests Google Translate extension may have been on if the student was translating their questions into Chinese text to understand them better. Sometimes they translate their answers inadvertently, write them in English and have them translated into Chinese responses, which seems very plausible.
