[ARCHIVED] who uploaded the Group Assignment?

How can I see which student uploaded the file for the group assignment?

I have a couple of groups where students did not communicate and there are three files uploaded. I cannot find a way to see who uploaded the files for the assignment.

Hi  @ljk19  Welcome  to the Canvas Community. If you are talking about a file uploaded to the group Files area, you should be seeing a "Last Modified by" column heading that will show you the possible person who uploaded it, unless, of course, someone else modified that file later.  If, however, you are referring to an assignment submitted as a file upload, there is really no way to tell.  In fact, this is pointed out in the blue area at the top of this specific lesson:  How do I assign an assignment to a course group?

• In group assignments, one submission will count for the entire group. Learn more about evaluating group work.

This is a common question, but it's the nature of the beast with group work in Canvas, as anything for that group represents a group effort, as it were.

If you look at each student's Access Report, I think you can see which student submitted the assignment.

1. Go to People. Click the student's name. Click the student's name again in the sidebar that pops up.
2. Click Access Report.
3. Find the assignment in the list, and check the "Times Participated" column.

The student who submitted will have a "1.0" here, while the other students will be blank.

If this is incorrect, somebody can correct me. But it seems like it might work.

We found out that if you go into Speedgrader and click on "Download Submission Comments" it pulls up a new tab that has the name of the student who submitted the assignment.

This may not work for the situation of multiple people turning in a group assignment, but if you are in a situation where you need to find out which student submitted for a group it should help.

For anyone else looking for an answer to this...

Go to the groups list (under People), and find the relevant group. From the three-dot menu, select 'Visit Group Homepage' to get into the Canvas space for the group. Then look in Files in the Submissions folder.
