Hello Jervais,
Are you using your school's Canvas server, or the public "free for teachers" version at https://canvas.instructure.com ? The free version uses your email address as your login name. Are you talking about updating your login name, or your email address?
Your email address is one of the main ways that Canvas identifies you, and also how it communicates with you. If you forget your password and need to reset it, Canvas is going to send that password reset email to the email address that it has recorded for you, so you may not get that email if your address is not up to date.
Also, if you are getting notifications from your Canvas courses, one of the ways that those notifications go ou (depending on your notification settings) is through email.
