Accomodation for Quizzes with time limit

How do I give one student an extended time limit on an online quiz on Canvas (due to special needs accommodation).  For example, I have weekly quizzes set for 60 minute time limits, but I have a student who has an accommodation need for double time. How do I make this accommodation for one student only?

Is it possible to make this extension for a single student for all quizzes at once, instead of quiz by quiz?

Currently, no,  @rfd131 , but it looks like that functionality is on the horizon-- --and it might be part of the massive quiz refactor project Canvas Studio: Modern Quizzing Engine.

How would a student know you gave them extra time on a quiz? It seems they would only know that if they knew how much time other students were given and I can't see that in student view. I would not expect instructors to email them with this information (not a good solution). Thanks. Kathleen

They wouldn't.

When they access the quiz, their time limit will include the extra time added on.  So if the quiz has a 30 minute time limit and you give them 15 minutes extra time, it will show the student a time limit of 45 minutes. 

You can test this using the Test Student. 

Did you want them to know?  If so, you would have to communicate that to them.

The ability for students to get some fixed time or time multiplier on all assessments (or all assessments of a particular type) would be fantastic.

Example, if you used Canvas quizzes for HW, weekly assessments and periodic higher stakes assessments to say 1.5x on HW, extra 30 minutes on weekly assessments, and an extra hour on exams would be valuable.

I completely agree with you. I have had multiple students requiring extensions in multiple classes. Going through each and every quiz is time-consuming, and it's very easy to miss one.

There is an add-on extension that allows instructors to set the accommodations for the entire course.

However, my college hasn't gotten it. It doesn't me no good.

Meeting the needs of students with disabilities should be an INTEGRAL part of Canvas. It should not be an "add-on" extra. Canvas could easily incorporate this add-on extension into its platform for all users.

Over 10% of my students have 504s and IEPs that require this accommodation, and it's a real PITA to go in quiz by quiz (and I'm using online canvas quizzes more than ever before) to change this ("moderate") piecemeal.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE allow us to set a flag for a student which will be reflected on any quiz that they take.

@SusanNiemeyer and @demellon There is a feature in New Quizzes called "Accommodations" and this does apply to all quizzes not just the quiz that you have open at the time, like Moderate does.  You would still need to do it in each class, meaning it does not apply to every class the student is in but it would work for that course.  You may both already know this but just thought I would share.

@nwilson7  Thank you so much for your reply. My district has not given instructors access to New Quizzes yet, so I'm only familiar with Classic Quizzes. I'm glad to see that New Quizzes addresses this concern.

@tim_ruckle If your institution has turned on New Quizzes, you can do this now. 

I know many institutions are holding back on New Quizzes, some have moved completely, and some are allowing it by choice.  If you go into the Feature Options menu in the course settings, if the ability is there, it will show as "New Quizzes" and can be turned on.  In New Quizzes is an "Accommodation" setting that does apply to all assessments not just the current one.

It would be wonderful if the instructor had the ability to assign accommodation for a single student for  so all quizzes.  With 10 quizzes with 3 student accommodations means a lot of unnecessary clicking.  .  Given I often have more than 3, the feature would save time and effort.  I note the first remark to suggest this ability was back in 2016.  Hope springs eternal!
