Any face detection proctoring app in Canvas?

Hello everyone.  I am glad that Canvas has provided this venue for teachers to ask things that could improve their teaching craft. I also believe that sharing is caring .  Here is my question, Is there such a thing as a proctoring app with face detection that is connected with Canvas?  I was wondering if webcams can be also used to check on students' presence while taking a quiz or assessment in Canvas?  If there's one please share.  Thank you.

You are going to want to check out the Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor.  It is an excellent, easy to use (by faculty and students) LTI that integrates quite nicely with Canvas, and is very reasonably priced!

We have had a site license for both products for several years.

Here is Respondus' own sales pitch, and it is not hype......................

Respondus Monitor is a fully automated proctoring solution that enables students to take online exams at any time of the day or night, without pre-scheduling. Students use a webcam to record themselves during an exam. A "startup sequence" guides them through requirements selected by the instructor, such as showing identification or making a short video of the exam environment. Only the instructor can review video recordings and the results of the proctoring session. Powerful analytics are used to detect suspicious behaviors during an exam session. Video segments with potential exam violations are flagged for the instructor, with an overall risk level assigned to the exam session.

Thank you Kelly.  Your reply is truly helpful!  However, as I read reviews about Respondus, I found out that challenges fall on Mac users.  Features that are working on Windows based devices are not working on Mac based Devices.  Not unless there is an update on the app regarding Mac devices.

Another thing, I  also have researched on youtube the integrity of the app, please check on this:  Lockdown browser hack - YouTube .  I do hope that this has been resolved by Respondus.

As far as I know, the current versions of the Windows and Mac versions of the browser have pretty much the same functionality on both platforms.  You can get information about product updates at

For questions about specific "hacks", it's always best to contact the company directly to ask.  Many times these "hacks" are very old and have been long since addressed.
