Our school has uniform Term dates and Admin is wanting to limit permissions to those. Are Term permissions controlled under Course State? Meaning, if Teachers do not have Course State permissions, will they be unable to change Term settings?
Thanks!
Term dates, as defined in https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-15402-6795264211 , can only be adjusted by Canvas admins. Course start and end dates can be adjusted by instructors based on certain permissions. Is it the course start/end dates that you want to disable teacher access to?
Yes, I would like to disable the course start/end date permissions. Thank you for clarifying.
Well, unfortunately I can't seem to figure out which teacher permissions control access to the course dates. Those fields are not mentioned anywhere in the Course Role permissions document. At the account level, it seems like the "Courses - add/edit/delete" permission rules most of the Course Details tab. But when I tried disabling that permission at the course level for teachers, it didn't prohibit editing of start/end dates. I also tried messing with the Course State and Course Calendar permissions, with no luck. Since we allow teachers to edit their course dates, it hasn't been something I've explored in depth. Hopefully someone at a school that does block this access will have better ideas.
Hi @dalena_jeffries ,
I can pretty confidently tell you there is currently no permission that prevents a teacher from changing the course dates (we have wanted this to be controlled by a permission for 5+ years now...). We did come up with some javascript to disable those fields on the settings page, though if dates get populated through the course import process, the javascript would also prevent the teacher from fixing or removing them (admins are unaffected though and can always fix things). If you're interested in the javascript to do this, let me know and I can share it with you.

Thanks so much for the helpful response, Chris. Right now, we'll hold tight with it the way it is... <sigh>.
