The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
My students (some 200 or 300 in each class) often create group themselves (in the "people" menu). Once groups are created there is apparently no standard way to find which group a particular student belongs to. For instance if I wonder about the group John belongs to but do not know the group number, there is no easy way to find the group except by browsing all groups and see if I can spot John. There is a workaround via SpeedGrader, but cumbersome and not easy to find. And group members do not appear in SpeedGrader so I have to jump back to "People" to see the actual group.
Hope you can add a feature to solve this.

Erik
@Erik67, I agree, it will be wonderful if instructors could have the same "Search Groups or People" box that students have when viewing or joining groups. Here's another workaround, one that will get even quicker as of the Canvas Release 2020-12-19: As an instructor, go into Student View and then navigate to Groups (under People) to use that search box.
And here's another recently added option: it's now possible as an instructor to export the current state of group memberships, through the Import button:
If you'd like to collaborate on an Idea Exchange conversation for this search idea, I'm game.
This feature would be very useful indeed. Thumbs up!
