How do I add columns on Canvas for assignments/grades?

I am setting up my grade section and need help with setting up columns for them.

Columns in the grade book are tied directly to graded items in the course (Assignments, Quizzes, Graded Discussions).  This means that if you want a column in the grade book, you must create a graded item in the tool and publish it.  Most commonly, Assignments are used to add columns to the grade book.
