The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
There are easily located directions for creating groups sets, editing them, and created and deleting groups. I could not find out how to delete a group SET, so I contacted Canvas chat. The agent directed me to the three dots next to the +GROUP button. You'll find an option here to delete an entire set. (Search me why that option isn't located next to +GROUP SET.) But, that's how to do it.
The tool that allows you to delete a group set is located at less than intuitive location. First, click the tab of the group set you want to delete. Two, click the option button (3 dots) that is next to the + Group button. Three, choose the Delete option on the drop-down list.
@mfeske and @yun_moh , the instructions for deleting a group set are at the bottom of this lesson How do I view all groups in a course as an instructor? We agree that the lesson was not all that easy to find, so we've added tags to the lesson to make it more likely to surface in search results.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention!
Doesn't look like this. I cannot get rid of group set. Each group, but not the set.
Can anyone in the community tell me how they do it?
@egleckle , I was able to delete a group set by clicking on the three vertical dots/kebob menu that displays to the right of the + Group button (the menu that governs group sets) and selecting Delete.
There were no three dots shown in my screen. I tried changing views but no three dots.
The visuals shown in the explanation online does not look like my screen.
No dots.
I can remove an individual group. But there is a whole tab that needs to be removed. I will have students posting in the wrong place if I cannot get rid of that tab. The whole tab, with no groups in it has to be removed. No dots.
It is called "Student Groups"
@egleckle , that is a very helpful piece of information! It tells me that you have enabled the ability for students to create their own groups, and that students in the course have used that permission to create groups (which they clearly have, since you see individual groups there). Once that permission has been been enabled and students have used the functionality, the Student Groups group set and its attendant tab cannot be removed. However, if you navigate to the settings* for the course and disable students' ability to create their own groups, they won't be able to create group—nor will they even see the Student Groups tab; it's only visible in your view.
*Click on Settings in the course navigation > Course Details tab > scroll down to more options > click on more options > deselect the checkbox for "Let students organize their own groups" > Save.
Will the second tab "Group" be unaffected? They have put their groups in that tab. Ii had made "Group" first, and then a second tab was made by TAs. I moved the one group set in that erroneous tab into the correct one. So, now, there are no groups in "Student Groups" tab and all the groups are being made over in the the tab "Group"
@egleckle , I have never done this, so I can't say. Please keep in mind that the Student Group tab isn't made by TAs or students; that tab only appears after a student (or in this case, a TA?) creates the first group. If the groups don't yet have content, you might want to delete them altogether and recreate them yourself after disabling the "Let students organize their own groups" setting. If they do already have content, I'd recommend coordinating with the TAs to find out what they're seeing.
Steph, the TAs did make "Student Groups." I made "Groups."
The students made one group in "Student Groups," and I then moved that one group into "Groups." I had already made a set of groups with numbers. So I preferred the "Groups" and move the one over.
Who can I contact who would know how I can get rid of this tab.
What you have showed me is not on my screens and not showing in any view.
I have to get rid of that tab or I will be dealing with it all semester.
@egleckle , my testing indicates that once students' ability to organize their own groups has been disabled, students cannot see that Student Groups tab; it only appears in the instructor's view. If this will still be an issue for you, I recommend that you first reach out to your school's Canvas admin so they can "Act As" a student to verify what students are and are not seeing. If the Student Groups tab persists in their view and poses an obstacle to smooth progress, please ask Canvas Support to have a look (How do I get help with Canvas as an instructor?).
Go to PEOPLE.
Click on the tab of the Group set you want to delete.
When the tab opens, click on the three dots next to the Plus-Group button.
Click delete.
This should delete the entire set.
Best,
Millie

It is "GROUP SET" not a group inside a set.
There are no "three dots" on the right side of the title.
Scroll back up... same advice has been given to me three times - doesn't work.
I don't know what to do. I need to get this removed, but none of the explanations identify the way to remove the whole group set. Right now, there are no groups in that SET. But it is misleading my students.
I had this same challenge. I have gone to settings and unticked the box that allows students to create groups. This will prevent any further confusion, but it does not delete the group set already established by a student. Can I ask the student that created the group to delete it?
Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I'm having the same issue.
Not being able to delete that Student Groups tab, even from the admin level, is not good enough. Some of our more veteran faculty keep enabling that setting and then wonder why they can't get rid of it if students are making groups there. How did anyone at Canvas think it was a good idea to make that something that can't be removed from the teacher view?
Hi,
Just hit the same issue
For those that see this then once the Student Group tab is in place it can't be removed, no option to remove this. I'm a full platform admin and I can't even take it down. Its a bit silly when I've been requested by the Tutor to take it down.
same here, but has not found a solution to remove the group set...
