How do I make a file available to some but not all students?

How do I make a file available to some but not all students?  For a large class, it would be a huge pain to email through canvas by selecting only the names of those students to receive the file (right now, canvas email only allows selecting student names one at a time -- very inefficient).  This is an important area where Canvas can improve.  Hope Canvas can work on this.

Hello there, @wsu_me ...

This isn't a direct answer about the files portion of your question, but you can select multiple students instead of just one-by-one when composing a message via the Canvas Inbox.  When you are selecting student names in the "To" field, just hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, and then click on each student name that you want to include in your message.  This should help speed up things a little bit for you.  This is covered in How do I send a message to a user in a course in t... - Instructure Community under the heading "Use Course Roster" >> "Add Multiple Users":

To send a message to multiple users in the course roster, press the command key (Mac) or the control key (Windows) and click the name of each user you'd like to add to your message. Pressing the keyboard key will keep the roster window open.
