How exactly are the videos linked together?

We noticed that when we added CC files to a video, it added them to every instance of that video (even when we added files in our test instance, it showed up in production). This is great! So it seems that the videos are actually linked in some way.
Since they do seem to be linked (or actually all pulling from the same file), how does viewership get separated out on a course by course basis?
