OneNote LTI and Grading in OneNote

I am currently trying to setup grading from the OneNote LTI to my Canvas courses so that I can grade from within the OneNote. I have created the notebook and the students are added and linked the notebooks following the direction given. The assignment is created in Canvas by OneNote but when I try to use OneNote to grade the names of students show up but there is no place to put a score in, as shown in the demos online... Thoughts?

I have the exact same question. My OneNotes are linked, but no place to add the score. Also, I tried creating the Class OneNote from within Canvas and it didn't auto-populate the class. Any reason why?

I have found the issue and fixed it. This issue is in the current iteration of the LTI and should be fixed soon according to Microsoft. In my case the names create in Canvas did not match the name created by the OneNote Classroom Notebook.

Canvas Name: Last_Name, First_Name Middle Initial

OneNote Classroom: First_Name Last_Name

The solution is to still follow all the steps to link the Notebook to the Canvas course as shown in the video. After you have linked the Notebook, you need to link each student's name in Canvas to the name given in the OneNote. This "Student Linking" is in the same tab as the Classroom Notebook Linking. This is a rather large task but the techs I talked to at Microsoft are working on the solution with the variations between systems.

We had trouble with this as well - supremely frustrating! It looks like Microsoft released an update to the Class Notebook Add-In that fixes the issue. I am able to create assignments and pass grades from OneNote to Canvas without having to manually map students and despite our display names being FirstName LastName in Canvas and LastName, FirstName in Office365.

So...everyone update your Class Notebook Add In!

Not sure I know how to update the Class Notebook Add-in.  Do you need to unlink it and re-link or will it update automatically?  Thanks!!

Hi Pam,

I was able to update mine from the update button in the Class Notebook Tab in the ribbon:

It will download the most recent version; run the file to start the update process. You'll have to close OneNote first so it can patch everything properly.

Hi Brian,

How do you create an assignment with a OneNote, and how did you grade those? 

I created a notebook, every student can see them, but other than grading the notebooks manually and adding the scores by hand, I can't see how to do this.

There was a request in the Community page to link the OneNote LTI with the speedgrader, but it didn't get enough votes.  I think if people could see what you can do in OneNote, they'd be over the mooon!

Correction to my previous post.  I was able to create an assignment and link OneNote to it ("External Tool"), and I can select speed grader, and I see the list of students across the top, but I can't see any of their notebook, because it says, basically "the student didn't submit anything", even though there is work in their notebook.

You have to open your OneNote, choose Review Work in the Classroom Notebook tab, choose the assignment, choose "Grade" (or something similar in the top portion of the box) and then input your grade from there.

Then you have to open Canvas, go to Grades and then choose post grades.

Jennifer, thank you!  I've found the "Review Work", but I can't select a Section or Page. 

Can you only grade something that you distributed?  I had the students write up one of their labs (microbiology) from this semester as extra credit... they're my guinea pigs for doing this "for real" next semester.  So, I didn't send anything to them.

How do I select what to grade?

Unfortunately, I believe the only way you can grade something is if you have previously created the page and distributed it as an "Assignment". So, it makes you plan ahead for the pages you want to distribute vs the pages you want to grade in the future.
