The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
Hi all,
I allow students to submit revisions and rewrites up until speech day (for public speaking). I base the "on time" part of their work on the initial due date and what they submitted by that date (if it's a piece of paper with just their name and then later they submit the finished product, obviously their grade reflects that original half-assedness).
This allows students to submit a solid working draft (for accountability and review by me) and then, as we get closer to their speech date and have more detailed instruction on content, they can revise up until they actually speak (which is always after the due date for the speech outline or manuscript). This allows them to tweak, adjust, fuss, edit, etc... until their actual speaking date (makes them calmer).
Because I've set my gradebook to deduct points for lateness, whenever they submit a revision Canvas marks the assignment in yellow (late). I know I can manually go back and remove that "lateness" penalty, but that's time-consuming and cumbersome.
There must be a way to set the "lateness" switch to OFF if they've submitted by the actual due date, right?
Thanks,
Polly
@probinson1 , no, I don't believe there is. The best I can think of is the following workaround, but I'm not sure it would do what you want it to do - https://community.canvaslms.com/people/james
Sorry I can't be more help, Kona
The link in the solution does not work. I am having the same problem and wondered what the workaround was that Kona suggested.
Hi there, @anne_richards ...
The link in @kona's response is a link to her husband's, James Jones, Canvas profile. However, that link was from the old Community site before it transitioned to the new interface that we are currently using. I think Kona may have meant to link to this "Canvancement" (Canvas Enhancement) created by James: Removing Missing and Late Labels - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com).
Also, in the Canvas Release Notes (2022-01-15) - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com), there was a recent update for the "Missing" label in the Gradebook that you might want to take a look at.
I hope this will be of some help to you. Let Community members know if you have any other questions about this...thanks!
This is an essential functionality needed that was not thought through. The answer is not a solution. This is a fundamental flaw and needs to be fixed.
Is there an update on this? We had a teacher twice now where ALL her assignments were marked as late -she didn't do it; how can a setting be made where assignments are NOT late?
Hi @AshleyWeaver - Could you share a little more about what the teacher experienced? Was this in the middle of a term or after a term's conclusion date?
@AshleyWeaver - Have you collaborated with Canvas Support with this issue? I wonder if they have insight to share or if this is working as intended/designed.
What's the best way to reach Canvas support? I have difficulty reaching them - that is why I posted here. Should I reach them via email using this email address: support@instructure.com ?
Cheers,
Ashley
Hi -
That works! This lesson will walk you through options too: How do I get help with Canvas as an instructor?
I found another inquiry similar to your experience. I wanted to make sure you saw this discussion and well "Send To" feature: Imports grade policies from another instructor
Thank you! This is assuring to know others are having the same issue; the only way we get help is through Canvas Community - we cannot get in touch with support... this has been an issue since last May. I am not an instructor. Hopefully, Canvas posts a solution to this known issue.
I mentioned this in another thread, but I have heard that this issue has been identified and addressed. If you have a sandbox to test it out, I hope you find that the settings no longer copy.
Does this mean if a teacher shares a module with another teacher, their grading policies (i.e. late policy, etc.) will NOT/no longer carry over? Was this resolved within the past 24-48 hours? Thank you again Kristin for all of your help! And timely responses.
@AshleyWeaver - From what I understand, yes. I hope it works for everyone!
Thank you Kristin!
I have the same problem, and there is a simple solution if Canvas makes a change. I see it as a bug in the code.
I am happy for my revisions to be marked late, but the problem is that canvas marks the ORIGINAL late too.
I give quizzes where I set the deadline to one date, and allow them to take it late. I set it to keep the highest score.
If a student does the quiz on time, and then goes back to take it again (say for practice) after the deadline, it subtracts the late penalty from the orginal submission (which was on time).
This needs to change, so that it applies the penalty to each submission based on its own sumission date.
