The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
I am using the Free Canvas for Teacher. I just entered my students names and emails to invite them to the class. One of the student's names is now appearing as a long number. I don't see anywhere that I can edit this and change it to his name. I tried to remove him from the course and start over, but when I enter his email address and name again, the name appears again as a number. Help.

I would contact the student to see what they can do. Perhaps the student already had an account and has entered the number as their name.

I am new to Canvas and am an instructor. One of my students Name and Login ID is a long number. When I click on the number, her profile shows her given name. She does not see the long number on her account. How can she fix this issue? Thank you.
@JAH4 ...
If your school has paid for Canvas (not using the Free For Teacher version), I'd suggest talking with their Canvas administrator or someone from their Online Learning / eLearning / Distance Education department to see if they can assist with the student name/login ID issue. We here in the Community wouldn't be able to assist with that because we don't have access to your school's internal Student Information System.
Hope this helps a bit!
We just use the basic free account. The student did manage to get her name corrected, so that appears in the People Name column. The Login ID should be her email, but it still shows the long numer.
