Take attendance for group activity

I am asking half of my students to work together for an hour of class time (either on a discussion board or webex) on a group activity. I will not be monitoring it as I will be working with other students outside at the same time. They will be submitting answers online as a group. How can I keep find out which students showed up and participated?

Are you expecting them to self-sign up for groups and submit as a group? Would that not indicate who has attended? You can lock the groups afterwards.
