"Make Ups" for Virtual Class Meetings?

Apologies if this is a double post -  I couldn't quite find what I was looking for in a search.

What are people's strategies for doing "make ups" when students can't attend virtual class meetings?

At Saint Rose, we use Zoom for online courses pretty frequently. Some faculty will require students to watch the recording of the Zoom session as a way to participate after the fact, but I don't find that very engaging.

I like to have them do a reflection paper on the reading we would have discussed in the class. I've also considered writing quizzes on that material, but that's a lot of front end work for me.

I make the Virtual Class an assignment with a link to the Zoom meeting in the description. I look at the Zoom attendance report for the meeting to see who attended. If a student does not attend the live video conference, then they must watch the recording on Zoom and post a reflection paper that contributes to what we discussed. They post their reflection on the Assignment page for the meeting. This allows me to assign participation grades in the same place in the Gradebook, regardless of whether they attended or wrote the reflection paper.
