Badges on Pathways for Micro-Credentials
At the recent 1EdTech (formerly IMS Global) Digital Credentialing Summit, the most freely deployed buzzwords were “micro-credentials” and “skills-based hiring”. We addressed skills-based hiring a bit last month, so let’s move on to micro-credentials.
Micro-credentials are bite-sized chunks of learning that lead to a particular set of skills. Micro-credentials can be composed of a couple of courses, a couple of semesters, or a few weekends of learning.
And badges along Canvas Credentials Pathways are a perfect way to represent a micro-credential learning journey.
You can see how the University of Maine uses badges along pathways for their micro-credentials. Click the image below to see this pathway live!
(More on that program here: https://www.maine.edu/student-success/micro-credentials/list-of-micro-credentials/)
If you’re already offering micro-credentials, consider where badging complements those programs. If you’d like to explore micro-credentialing further, this compilation is a terrific resource: The Present and Future of Microcredentials. As a quick start, consider bundling existing content (courses, webinars, experiential learning) into skills-aligned credentials.
Are you already considering micro-credentials? We’d love to hear about it. Contact us at CredentialsCSMTeam@instructure.com
And next time we’ll explore badging beyond the student population.
