Dev Key Custom Fields question - preferred name recognition

I am working with a third party to integrate their product with our instance, but they are new to Canvas LTIs, and we have had to figure out some of the details through trial and error. The integration appears to be working now, for the most part. However, the third party app is recognizing and welcoming test users by their legal name, rather than their preferred name, which could be problematic for us.

This is the first time I have gone through an LTI integration process with such sketchy instructions, but I am guessing that I would need to add a value to the Custom Fields section of the Developer Key details to address this issue. Does this sound right? If so, how would I go about crafting that value?

Since you are looking into values to add to the Custom Fields, you may want to review the available variable substitution values.  The one that appears to provide the user's preferred name is Person.name.display

Thank you, James, that seems right.  Would the actual Custom Field entry look something like this?
person_name_display=$Person.name.display
