[SpeedGrader] AI-Generated Teacher Feedback Integration

Problem statement:

Teachers face significant time constraints when providing detailed and timely feedback on student assignments, particularly in virtual and asynchronous learning environments. The standard 5-7 day turnaround for grading can delay opportunities for students to revise and resubmit their work. This delay impacts student learning and progress, particularly when assignments require iterative improvement based on teacher feedback.

Proposed solution:

Most if not all teachers are already using external AI tools such as ChatGPT and Magic School to help generate lessons, clarify instructions, and teacher feedback. Integrate AI-powered tools into Canvas to assist teachers in generating feedback on assignment submissions without going outside the system and duplicating effort.

 

This system would:

  1. Analyze assignment submissions using the grading rubric and/or assignment instructions provided by the teacher. Generate feedback suggestions tailored to the specific criteria and expectations outlined for the assignment.
  2. Allow teachers to review, accept, revise, or reject AI-generated feedback, ensuring that the final feedback aligns with their professional judgment and understanding of the content.
  3. Enable teachers to rate and train the AI by refining its suggestions, improving the accuracy and quality of future feedback generation.

This AI integration would help teachers:

  • Provide timely and detailed feedback, enabling students to revise and resubmit assignments more quickly.
  • Focus their efforts on nuanced and personalized guidance rather than repetitive, task-based commentary.
  • Reduce overall grading time while maintaining high standards for feedback quality.

For students, quicker feedback means faster learning cycles, better understanding of course expectations, and improved outcomes. Canvas could implement this feature as an optional tool, allowing teachers to opt in based on their needs and preferences. The ability to refine AI-generated suggestions would ensure the system remains flexible and adaptable across diverse teaching styles and subject areas.
