[Assignments] Step-by-step reminders for multipart assignments
Student completion of multi-part assignments benefit from a series of reminders linked to the same canvas activity. For example, after submitting a rough draft, students may be assigned a peer review, which they must revisit the rough draft submission page in order to find.
There are a couple of methods that use current canvas capabilities, but they all have problems:
- Pages can be created with instructions to return to a prior activity for the next step, but having to renavigate to a prior module causes confusion for students as does the lack of progress monitoring they are used to from other assignments that confirm completed submissions.
- The activity itself can be added to multiple modules, but then the first view/submit/score will mark all views/submits/scores complete in the module checklist and the instructions primarily cover the first step in the assignment (i.e. submit a draft).
- External links to canvas pages can be created and have an instruction for the next step used as the page title, which will show up as the header above a copy of the canvas page. Students then have a second module checklist requirement to “view” the same activity with a title reminding them of the next action (for example "complete a peer review"). The first link to the activity itself does not result in the second link tracking the page as already viewed for the module checklist. The problems with this work-around is that all of the left side menus are duplicated on the assignment page they've returned to and course copies leave the link pointing to the copied course.
When the external tool is pointing to a canvas page to be opened in the same window, cause the display to skip the left-side school menu and left side course menu for the inset website view of the linked activity, since they are already available surrounding the entire inset. Also, when a course contains an external link pointing back into the same canvas course, cause the course copy to automatically update the link in the course copy to the matching part of the new course.
