[Canvas Mobile - Teacher] Speed Grader Sliding Scale

Problem statement:

In the current version of Canvas SpeedGrader on the iPad, the grading scale only allows movement between whole numbers, which means teachers cannot assign decimal values (e.g., 3.5 or 2.5) directly using the slider. Instead, they have to manually input these grades, which significantly increases the time required to grade each assignment. This process is particularly inefficient for teachers using standards-based grading, where decimal scores are often necessary to accurately reflect student performance on assignments with multiple criteria. Streamlining this process by allowing the slider to support decimal values would make grading more efficient, saving time for teachers while maintaining precision and improving the overall grading workflow.

Proposed solution:

Canvas SpeedGrader should include a sliding scale feature for more precise grading. This would be especially beneficial for teachers using a standards-based grading system, where assignments are often scored on a 1-4 scale. By enabling decimal point values, teachers could assign grades that reflect a student’s performance more accurately, particularly when an assignment includes multiple criteria for a standard. This feature would enhance grading precision, providing two key benefits: teachers could offer more detailed feedback, and students would have a clearer understanding of their grades. This approach could also improve grading accuracy for traditional 100-point scales.

This image shows the issue. When you use the slider option, you can't be precise in the grading. You have to manually tap on the grade and then type in the specific grade instead of potentially using the slide. It's a little deceiving here because you can use the sliding scale but it only allows for whole number scoring. Screenshot 2024-11-22 at 12.20.49 PM.png
