Discussion checkpoints allow canvas to separately measure initial posts and also replies to those initial posts. In practice, the replies may happen at a later time, and/or from a different link. Students may see the identical prompt and consider that they must have already finished it.
As soon as a student posts their initial post to a discussion forum, when discussion checkpoints are enabled, the prompt should update to minimize the original prompt and in its place show how many reply posts are required and how many have been completed. There could be an optional box for prompts specific to the replies as well. This second view of the discussion will help students identify how much remains for them to do.
