In the past month, we have had at least one teacher a week overwrite their Canvas courses when trying to import new modules or assignments to their current courses. Many teachers build content in the sandbox and import it as they go through the year or import content from last year's course as they go. We are K12, so at this point of the year, overwriting their course affects a year's worth of content. Prior due dates are overwritten causing assignment to disappear from their grading periods, and overwrite of other assignment settings immediately changes students' calculated course grades. If staff reaches out to us for help before Beta resets, we are able to determine prior assignment settings and assist the teacher in "restoring" their course. This has taken up many hours of our time and creates a lot of stress and panic for teachers who. If we don't know about the issue before Beta resets we have a very significant problem. By defaulting to the "import all" option, it is too easy for the instructor to reimport an entire course when they only intend to import a module. Even if you've realized you selected all content by mistake, there is no way to cancel the process once it has started.
Put roadblocks in place so it is more difficult for staff to accidentally overwrite course content. EX. Change the default selection to "selected content". This forces the instructor to pick the content they want to import and reduces the chances that they will overwrite any entire course. Even if an instructor does want to import all content, they can easily check all the boxes in the selection window, or they can exit out of the selection window and start a new import with the "import all" selection.
