Video and audio messaging through the inbox can be cumbersome, particularly when used across desktop and mobile versions of the Canvas application. Often, when users try to record or send a video or audio message, it results in an attachment. This can create confusion, as it is not always clear which app on a mobile device will open the attachment. Users should not have to download and open a file to receive a message or assignment comment. The current multimedia messaging experience is cumbersome for both instructors and students. One-on-one communication is crucial to the education of thousands of students.
Video and audio messages through the inobox and assignment comments should be automatically named, stored, and available for seamless streaming on desktop and mobile Canvas versions. Users should be able to download these messages if they choose. Since Gen Alpha students are already accustomed to video chat, they naturally expect a smooth and user-friendly audio and video messaging experience as they find on services like Snapchat, iMessage, and other popular platforms. Instructure should enhance this feature, especially its value in online asynchronous courses.
