[New Quizzes] Simplify Fill in the Blank Grading
I use the fill in the blank option in canvas new quizzes to create guided stats write-ups. There will be dozens (sometimes even over 100) blanks in a write up. I try my best ahead of time to do "specify correct answers" for common issues that pop up so that things that are actually correct but slightly different than my key answer are counted as correctly (e.g. if I originally have p < .05 but a student doesn't add spaces and has p<.05). I can't foresee everything, however, so sometimes I have to go back in after submissions if I notice a common issue for which I didn't account and add it to the "specify correct answers" and regrade.
A major problem with this is that, when regrading, it deletes all the comments I gave to students previously on that question and I have to start all over with my comment feedback when I may have been giving feedback on other items that are not regraded since all fill in the blanks are part of the same question. If I don't regrade and add every single deviation to "specify correct answers", then an item is marked as red and incorrect. I can give points back manually at the bottom of the question but the fact that it is marked red confuses students. Even if I leave a comment "you actually got this correct and I gave you a point back for it", they still send me panicked e mails asking why they got it wrong because they rarely read feedback.
Let us mark the individual blanks as correct rather than or in addition to adding points back to the total so that the item goes from red to green and students are not confused. If we can mark individual items as correct so they change from red to green, we also don't have to use the regrade function and add every conceivable iteration to the "specify correct answers" option for a particular blank. Also maybe set things up so that if we do "regrade" something, it doesn't delete all of the written comments we made previously for that question.
