Grading panel now open by default?!

In the Canvas Teacher app, suddenly the 'grading panel' is open by default every time I open a student paper.  This is so frustrating/time-consuming, as I now have to close the panel, then select the pen icon so I can write on the paper.  I would love to be able to set a default state individually, but if that isn't possible, please don't make me have more clicks to just do what I need to do (i.e. grade the paper!)

Anyone have a solution for me?
