Good morning community!
I have a teacher (just one so far, early days) who is trying to grade student submissions using Canvas Teacher on her iPad in the app (not browser). She has three sections of Chemistry cross listed into one larger class. When she goes into the SpeedGrader, she is not able to filter the students by section to grade each class' submissions separate from the other. I have checked the following:
1. She crosslisted correctly.
2. She has posted the assignment for each section independently (due to different submission and available times).
3. She does have the "Launch SpeedGrader Filtered by Student Group" checked in her course settings.
4. SpeedGrader DOES filter by section/group when using the browser (so the problem only appears to be when using the app on an iPad).
We have been able to filter by section/group on the iPad App before, did something change? Is there another setting I should check to find out where the problem is?
Thank you for your assistance!

I have the same question. I can't filter by section any more...what happened? BRING BACK MY FILTER!
Thanks Trish. Oddly good to know we are not alone 👽 and/or it not being the fault of user error 🤔 on our part. I hope we can get some help out here, I am out of ideas!!
Hi @KatGorringe and @TrishVanValken ...
I don't know if this will help or not, but I noticed that the latest version of the Canvas Teacher iPad app (version 2.0.0 which was released yesterday) has several updates to the SpeedGrader. You can find those updated listed at:
Canvas Teacher on the App Store
Look under the section on "What's New". (You can also see the Version History in this section, too.)
Again, I don't know if any of the updates are related at all to your question, but I wanted to share the link with you just in case...for what it's worth.
Thank you for sharing this Chris. I am not seeing anything within the update that points to them taking away this feature or a glitch that disabled this feature. I still don't think we have a solution to this one. Keeping this out there...
Hi there, @KatGorringe ...
You might want to consider submitting a trouble ticket to Instructure for this. You can do this directly from within the iPad app. At the top left corner of the app, there should be a three-lined hamburger icon. Tap on that, and then there should be an option for "Help". (I'm looking at my iPhone Canvas Teacher app...which has a similar interface.) You should have an option to "Report a Problem".
I hope this will help a bit. Sing out if you have any other questions about this.
Thank you Chris, great suggestion!! I will do this!
I did a chat the other night as well. They are looking into it. It seems to be an issue with the IPad. Hoping they can get this filter back....
Thank you so much Trish, great to know they are on it! In the meantime, it does work on the browser (although there seems to be an added "click" in there as well that was changed), but for those who like to annotate on their student submissions, it is a frustration. 🤞
It appears to work on the web version for me. Our school is having us all submit it to the ideas page as well.

I still want my filter back on the IPad!
Yes, working on the web version here as well. For my teachers who like the ability to annotate though, web version is less than ideal. Great idea to submit to the ideas page!! We will do the same.
Agreed. I write notes on the students homeworks so that they know what they need to work on. We just will have to switch back and forth until they finally fix it. BRING BACK OUR FILTER!!!
Yes! BRING BACK OUR FILTER!
Done! Hopefully they listen to reports.
Another issue I just discovered is that when you are grading with speed grader in the IPad, you have to do an extra step by clicking on the "attempt" to see what time the student turned their homework in. I want to just look and see the time like we used to be able to do. This is so much more cumbersome and frankly useless at this point. This has made grading take 3 times longer and is no longer actually "speed" grading! BRING BACK OUR FILTERS AND OUR TIME STAMPS!
Our district is also having this issue! Bring back our cross listing for iPads-please!
I am having this issue with my Canvas even in a browser. Any ideas? I am able to see the filter and click on the section but after I do it does not filter down to that section.
Yes, even in the browser this has changed. There is a bit more clicking you have to do in order to just filter down to one section. It is frustrating!! I made this short video for teachers at my school to explain how this feature changed. Feel free to give it a watch and I hope it might help!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this! I honestly thought I messed something up when I set up the courses this year. I hope Instructure figures this out soon. Would you mind if I sent this video to our teachers?
Never mind I will just send out step by step directions with screenshots. Again, thanks so much for your help!
If it helps others, please send away!
Thanks for this! But I'm still not sure whats going on with the IPad. UGH! I'm going to share this video with our tech people also.
STILL WANT MY FILTER BACK! 🙂
Agreed!!!! 😬
