[ARCHIVED] Adding an instructor after course has closed

I was the instructor of record for a course for the past 25 years.  Last fall (2019) I was on sabbatical.  A colleague taught the course on my behalf.  To access the Fall 2019 course in Canvas I need to be added as an instructor.  Can you help me accomplish this?

Hi  @himal  and welcome to the Canvas Community!  This is something that a Canvas administrator at your institution would be best suited to assist with.  I play that role at our institution and we have particular processes in place when a question like this arises.  Normally what I will do is create a copy shell for the course and import all of the content into that shell, then add the instructor who needs the material to this shell.  This way they can do whatever they need with the content itself including importing it into the new teaching shell, but the individual does not have access to grading records or other items specific to the students of the class for which they are not the instructor of record.  Your admin may have other procedures in place.  In addition, those in the Community would not have access to your Canvas instances which would be needed for adding individuals to a course.

Hi Tom,

Once a course has been concluded because it's past the terms end date editing of the course is no longer allowed. What we do is allow our instructors to have a master shell or #blueprint course where they can make any edits they need to at anytime and once their shell for the term is made available to them they are then able to import the content from their master course or blueprint into the live shell.

Depending on your permissions you may need to get with your Canvas administrator locally to see if this is allowed and how you need to go about requesting a master or blueprint shell.

If you absolutely have to be enrolled in the course for some reason this can be done, but first the course or term dates have to be modified so that the course comes back into an active state. Once in an active state you can be enrolled and then the dates can be changed back to how they were originally so that students can't access/participate in the course again.
