Attaching pdf to quiz

Hi, I want to attach a pdf to a quiz, without my students getting notified that I have uploaded a file. The problem is that when I go to the files in the content manager on the right, it only allows me to choose files I have uploaded to the course. Even when I click to upload a new file, it only allows me to upload it to the course's files. This is a problem, because students can get notified that a file has been uploaded and even if I set the file as unpublished they have access to it via the link in their email. I am wondering why can't I see my instructor's file folder here? That way I could place a link to a pdf I have in that folder, the students would not get notified because they are not notified of the files I place in my personal folders, and then they will only be able to see the pdf when they are taking the exam. Or is there any other better way to go about this?
