Automatic Zeroes For One Section

When I publish a new assignment with a due date in the future, Canvas automatically assigns zeroes to some of the students in my course. All of these students are in the same sections. I had the function on for automatic zeroes for no submission at the due date and that's never been a problem. I tried turning that off and there was no change. I have it on 'everyone' in the assignment settings with one due date.

Any ideas?

I would definitely reach out to Canvas support with this issue. The folks answering questions here are just part of the community and cannot handle a bug like this.
