Hi @ShawnHuff ,
I'm a CSM, part of the EMEA team. I came across such a similar request before but Canvas doesn’t have a built in “email when a student completes a course” feature, but there are several ways institutions have set this up.
Approaches that work well:
-
Module Requirements & Prerequisites – Many institutions make the last step of a course a “completion activity” (like a required short quiz or survey) and set it as the final requirement in the last module. Once that’s submitted, the teacher can be notified and its an easier way to filter out students who have completed the whole requirements and course.
How do I add prerequisites to a module?
How do I add requirements to a module? - Student in Need of Attention (in Intelligent Insights) or Ask your data– This requires investment but it has a dashboard which you can filter to highlight students who have completed their work or may require follow-up. Teachers can then easily see and reach out to those students (by exporting the data). However, as an admin, you can reach out to those students as well.
What is Intelligent Insights?

API – Some institutions use this to detect when all module requirements are met and automatically send an email to the correct teacher. This option does require technical setup and would depend on the inhouse resources you have. Canvas has an open API which is great for integrations or getting data.
