[ARCHIVED] Canvas Submissions - new student version

The new student submission page is causing me problems. When the student goes to submit a Google Doc using their Chromebook, they have to download and make a pdf or click the upload and then choose Google Apps. 

I am finding that the student's work then does not open as a Google Doc, but downloads to my computer. When I go to open it, I do not have software that supports whatever it is saving as either using a chromebook or Dell computer.

I am not sure what is going wrong. The only time it has worked is when they download their Google docs or slides as a pdf.  Can you direct me on what we are doing wrong.

This has just started happening since the new layout for students. Is there something my district needs to open or change?
