I know it's been several months since you first posted this question here in the Community. Hopefully this issue has been resolved by now, however. Whenever you and your students experience issues like this, one of the first things you can do is check the Canvas Status Page:
https://status.instructure.com/
This would give you a good indication if Canvas is up and running or not.
