What's the difference between copying a course vs. exporting and importing its contents? When would I do one or the other?

From my experience there really is no difference other than the number of steps that it takes.  From what I can see, the Copy a Canvas course and the Import Content > Canvas Course Export Package basically does the same thing.  I have only used the export and import of the imscc file when I was moving between instances of Canvas.  Other than that (and possibly wanting the export file for archival purposes) I don't use the export/import process.  The Copy a Canvas course is just faster.

Hi all,

Although I have not seen a difference between the two mentioned above, I have seen that creating an export package then importing into another course can overwrite a Blueprint template (i.e. change the visibility/order of items in the Navigation Pane), while just importing from another course (assuming you have access) does not affect the Navigation Pane.

As such, we've been advising staff to just go to the destination course and import content that way.
