Google Drive Cloud Assignment link for students - same doc, or new copy?

When students click the link to their copy of a Google Drive Cloud assignment, does the link always go to the same doc, or does it make a new version of the doc each time they click the link?

Say, for example, I have students working on a Google Drive Cloud Assignment over the course of a week or two. After they click on the link the first time and edit the doc, will those edits still be there if they click the link the next day? Or, will a new blank doc open up?

The link sends students to the same document every time. Not a fresh copy.

They can close the google doc, go back to Canvas and click the link, and they will open their same edited copy.
