#HOW TO MAKE A QUIZ SO THAT ANSWERS HAVE TO BE ENTERED ALL AT ONCE

I am very new to Canvas as an instructor, the students have had homework assignments and we have greatly appreciated that they are able to say out of a 50 question assignment, get in and answer 20 questions, have an interruption, get out, then return to finish entering their answers, versus what we were used to with Blackboard, where all answers had to be entered at once.

I am doing our first quiz but of course, for the quiz, I do not want the students to be able to answer only a portion of the questions, see the test in entirety, get out to find answers that they need and then return to finish answering all questions.  How do you make a quiz so that they are only able to submit answers all at once without being able to get out and back in?

Hi Kerri,

There is no fool proof way to do what you are asking.  Students and open a different browser tab, a different browser completely, or even use a phone or 2nd computer to look up answers.  But, one thing you can do is set a time limit.  That will accomplish some of what you are asking because the clock keeps going once they start the quiz.  What options can I set in a quiz? 

Canvas does keep logs while students are taking a quiz.  And while Canvas can't prevent them from opening another tab and looking up an answer, it will likely show up in a log if the student left the quiz page https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-12835-4152295598 

If you really want to lock down a student taking a quiz there are some 3rd party options.  One that I am familiar with is Respondus Lockdown Browser.  When integrated it forces students to use a special web browser which won't allow them to view other web sites, or copy/paste answers.  They also have an option named Monitor which will also use their web cam to verify the environment and then record them throughout the exam.  Of course Respondus costs money so I'm just mentioning it as an example.
