says I need to update my browser but I am going through google chrome and I can't get to the login

Hello,  @laura_wood2  and  Welcome to the Canvas Community! If you're receiving a message that your browser is not supported, chances are that you're not using one of the two most recent versions of Chrome (at this writing, those would be 76 and 77). Which browsers does Canvas support? provides additional detail.

If you've already ascertained that you are on one of those versions, try clearing the browser cache and cookies, then closing and relaunching the browser, before attempting another login.

If that doesn't work, please contact Canvas Support for additional assistance. General instructions are in How do I get help with Canvas as a student? but your institution's support setup might vary somewhat, in which case ask your local IT Department for additional troubleshooting assistance.
