How do I not have past assignments show up missing for a newly enrolled student?

We have been in school for about 4 months and have completed 30+ assignments in our Reading course. I recently just had another student placed into my class from another class. When I enrolled them into my Reading Canvas course, ALL 30+ previous assignments showed up missing on their Canvas Reading course. These were assignments that were given to the class prior to their enrollment. What can I do to make sure they are not missing on their grade book, but a be given a "No Score"?

Hi there! You could mark the assignments as "Excused" in the gradebook, which will keep them from being marked as missing and will omit them from being used to calculate the student's overall grade. I believe you will have to do that for each assignment individually, so if other folks have input on how to do it in a more bulk fashion, that might help!

To me, the above guide makes the process seem a bit more difficult. You can just click where the points would be for that student's score on the assignment and type EX, which will mark it as excused. It's a bit quicker than all the clicking around!

You can excuse grades from the student so they don't show as missing, but you likely want those grades to populate. If the student was in another course, completed these assignments, and then was transferred to your course - the assignments scores need to be either export/imported from the previous course to this one. Or you can manually enter the grades for the student if you can get the school or teacher to provide their grades from the previous course. Additionally, if all of these assignments were done outside of canvas (an external app) you may want to check with the 3rd party where they completed them. There may be a way to get access or have the student's scores transferred over but you would need to speak with them directly.

In short, speak with your school. See if they can get the grades from the student if they were done in canvas directly or via 3rd party. Either manually entering their grades or export/importing them. Hopefully this helps.
