How is the n-times Outcome scoring actually calculated?

I'm working on a tool for staff to explore how different Outcome scoring mechanisms for the Learning Mastery Gradebook actually work. I'm curious if anyone has a specific example of how the n Times scoring method actually works.
In the Outcome editor, the following description is given:
Calculation Method: Achieve mastery n times (where n is an integer, 1-5)
Example: Must achieve mastery at least n times. Scores above mastery will be averaged to calculate the final score.
Item scores: 1, 4, 2, 3, 5, 3, 6
Final Score: 4.2

Let's use the item scores above with n=2 as an example. This student has reached the threshold of 2 mastered attempts (3) and three times above mastery. Does that make their score a 3 or a 5 (average 3, 5, and 6)?
If n=5, you can get the 4.2 by averaging all mastery attempts (4, 3, 5, 3, 6), but the description makes it sound like only scores above 3 are averaged.
I n=5 and each attempt is a 3 (ie, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3), is a 3 the final score? Or is it averaged into a 5?
I think the example in the UI could be clearer about how the score is calculated. Anyone have experience with this calculation method who can help clarify the nuance?
