[ARCHIVED] How to hide an assignment in the gradebook

I know how to hide a grade but I want to completely hide an assignment so it doesn't show in the gradebook at all.  With virtual teaching kiddos are really confused about information in the gradebook from assignments that are closed and were before we went online virtual. I want to clean up the gradebook so they can only see the assignments they are worried about.

Hi  @stephanierosema  Welcome to the Canvas Community.  Thank you for posting your question.  When you are editing the details of your assignment, there should be a drop-down list for "Display Grade as".  Set this to "Not Graded".  This will remove the associated assignment name column from the Gradebook.

Will this still count the grade towards their overall average?

If it's "Not Graded", it won't appear in the Gradebook and will not be calculated in the total.

So then how do I hide a column and still have it affect the grade? For

example, if you had two assignments before virtual learning that are still

counting but you don't want the students to see those grades any longer

because they are not relevant then how can you hide them. Or another

example would be at progress report time we do not let students submit

assignments that are past due from the first half of the quarter so for

unorganized students or students that are EC or ELL they get confused

looking at their grades not knowing if they can still turn in an assignment

or not...it would just be easier to tell them "if you can see it in your

grades screen then you can still turn it in"

Hello  @stephanierosema ...

If you want the score from the assignment to be included in student grades, then it has to be visible in the Gradebook.  So, you'd change the "Display Grade as" drop-down to "Points" (or whatever option you wanted to use).  You will see a corresponding column for that assignment in the Gradebook.  You might be able to use a Grade Posing Policy (formerly Mute Grades):

Yeah, thanks for the info but I figured that what I want to do can't be

done in Canvas. If during a quarter my students are going to have say 30

grades then I'd like at the half-way point for their average to be whatever

they achieved the first half but then clean up the grade book so they can't

see any assignments from the first half. Essentially like the hide grade

function but instead of just the eyeball over the grade it would hide the

assignment too. I like Canvas but I really miss the grade book features in

Blackboard, they were a lot easier and student / teacher-friendly.

This does not appear to be an option for all on canvas multiple choice assignments. I have a number of multiple choice homeworks that were on Canvas that I now am using as optional homeworks. I want them to have the ability to complete the assignment, but I don't want it showing up in their gradebook. I have put the weight on those assignments as 0%, but the fact that they are still columns in the gradebook gets students worried they are required.
