The way I would unenroll from any course I fell i'm unable to complete is have myself remove from the classes is to drop at the time before receiving a W. For what ever the reason you have to discontinue. You needs to also notify  Registration Office by filling out a cancellation card. And as profession let your instructor no you need to drop the class.

I'm not sure if you realized this or not, but you posted this comment in the global Canvas Community website.  The suggestion you offered here may apply to you and the policies at your school, but it may not apply to others here in the Canvas Community...just so that you are aware.  Each school has their own policies and procedures in place for unenrolling from courses within the Canvas LMS (Learning Management System), so it would be important for folks to check with their own school if there were any questions and/or concerns.
