It sounds like you were able to access your courses and assignments through the app, but were not able to do so when you switched to a browser on a laptop: is that correct? If so, it's possible that the browser on that device is out of date, so compare its version to those listed in What are the browser and computer requirements for Canvas?, and if yours is older, update as needed.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, please follow Robbie's advice and contact the instructor directly for additional assistance.
