How do I load a PDF and have it open automatically in the course rather than the student having to download it and read it separately?

The following document may be helpful What types of files can be previewed in Canvas? 

I just tested this in my instance of Canvas by uploading a PDF file into a module in my sandbox. It opened for preview quite nicely.

There is a disclaimer in the guide that "Canvas supports previews for documents up to 100 MB and 999 pages."

Perhaps somebody else has an answer.

I just discovered that when you click on the link icon in the header, and then "edit link", you can choose to have the display be previewed "inline", and be sure to click on "Expand preview by default" so it happens automatically.

Thanks for posting that information.  I was unaware that was available.  However, most of my links are external links and those options only make sense for viewing documents.
