Setting the sandbox up

How does one get started? i.e. I'd like to put a description of my courses on Canvas, followed by a syllabus and additional resources (on separate "pages"). Where do I start? Where is the sandbox people keep referring to, it seems to be the equivalent of a folder where one can modify any item for a while until ready to upload?
