Unscored students in Canvas receiving zeros in PowerSchool

We are noticing that in certain instances unscored assignments in Canvas are being passed back to PowerSchool as zeros.  Has anyone noticed the same thing with grade passback and do you have a solutions for this?

I don't use power school, but just a thought about what may be causing this grade passback.  Do you have the treat ungraded items as 0 selected for the gradebook?  This only shows up in the Canvas grade book after the until date of the project (or possibly the due date) has passed.  You did not mention what the Canvas grade book looked like as far as grades showing and you did not mention if the assignment was past the due/until date - so I just put this information out there as a possibility.

No, I do not have this setting chosen. I still see the grades as ungraded in Canvas, but they are going into PowerSchool as zeros...but only if the student was accidently given a grade, then returned to an ungraded status in Canvas.

I also have seen this. It is very random. I have many students that are graded and some that have no score for an assignment. On passback, one showed a zero in  PowerSchool, but was not graded in Canvas. The rest of the ungraded students were passed back correctly to PowerSchool as no grade. I don't know why one particular student is getting zeros. I try to re sync, but it continues to come over as a zero for her.

I found out what happened in once instance of this problem.  The teacher had entered scores for the assignment in Canvas, realized she had entered them for the wrong grade column, and then removed them.  This assignment where the grades had been removed came over to PowerSchool as zeros.

Yes! I believe that is the exact situation for me. Have you found any way of getting it to go back to an ungraded score? Thanks!

PS. Remastering the grades does not fix the zero in Canvas.

I am not aware of anyway to make it go back to the default state that exists before a grade has been entered just by changing what has been entered in the grade box.  Once something has been entered, there is probably a state variable(just my phrasing, I do not know what the correct name should be) that indicates that a grade has been entered and when you delete the grade that state variable stays set.  

Having said all of that, there is probably a way through API's or javascripts to change that state variable to the default value.  Much more involved solution for the regular user.  I do not have the answer for what I mentioned about API's or javascripts.

You have to go remove it in Powerschool manually.

We have instructed teachers to stop leaving blanks in the Canvas gradebook. I know that's a lot of work, but until there is a fix for us they put an EX in the Canvas gradebook and PowerSchool reads that as excused. That's our current temporary solution.

I have had a teacher report the same. She enters exempt for students and leaves the grade empty. In PS the grade shows as a zero.

I'm surprised this hasn't been resolved yet.  This is a huge issue for people that only use zeros as a placeholder grade.

We are having this issue as well. When we go to finalize grades and run a remaster, PowerSchool pulls in zeros for random blanks and it's never consistent. It's frustrating that our teachers can't leave blanks in the Canvas gradebook just in case a zero is pulled randomly. It's an extra frustration at a time when our teachers are already frustrated. Can we please work on a fix that doesn't require extra work for teachers?
