Your Canvas Administrator can guide you to the specific permissions created for your school.

At my institution as an example, the "faculty auditor role" would well for a non-editing teacher role.

Are you asking if it's possible? If so, then in theory it is. It's in the "Permissions" which are available to admins. You can set up all sorts of combinations when creating roles in Canvas.
