Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) for students to access course materials, manage assignments and deadlines, view grades, communicate with instructors and peers, and participate in course activities. Its primary purpose is to provide a centralized, organized, and accessible platform for all aspects of a course, supporting flexible and blended learning styles by allowing students to engage with content and submit work anytime, anywhere. 

I would say that, YES, it would be important if you used the Canvas LMS and it would be part of your grading and success in your course(s).
