Power BI and Canvas Data

Hello,

I am being asked to pull in metrics from Canvas into Power BI.  Any assistance would be appreciated.  I have reviewed the Developer Key Creation.  Unsure how to tie it together.

Welcome to the Canvas Community. I have not used Power BI, but I imagine it's similar to Tableau in that you'll still have to get the files and load them to a data source or use them flat.

The CLI tool helps you get the files.

Then, loading them into a data source depends on your tech and preferences. I use Embulk, some use SSIS, or any number of Amazon solutions including Build a Canvas Data Warehouse on AWS in 30 minutes!

Hello, I have recently passed the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst PL-300 Exam and encountered the same issue during my exam preparation. To pull metrics from Canvas into Power BI, you can follow these general steps as they worked perfectly fine for me:

1. Generate Developer Key:

   • Make sure you have administrative access to Canvas.
   • Go to the Canvas Developer Key creation page and generate a developer key. This key will be used to authenticate your requests to the Canvas API.

2. Understand Canvas API:

   • Familiarize yourself with the Canvas API documentation to understand the available endpoints and data you can retrieve.

3. Power BI Web Connector:

   • Open Power BI and use the Web connector to connect to Canvas API. In Power BI Desktop, go to "Home" > "Get Data" > "Web" and enter the Canvas API endpoint URL.

4. Authentication:

   • Set up authentication using the developer key you generated. You may need to use OAuth or API key authentication, depending on Canvas's requirements. Input the key in the appropriate authentication section of the Power BI Web connector.

5. Query Data:

   • Construct queries in Power BI to pull the specific metrics you need. This involves specifying the API endpoints, parameters, and any filters required.

6. Transform and Load Data:

   • Use Power BI's Power Query Editor to transform and shape the data according to your reporting needs. This may include cleaning data, renaming columns, or merging tables.

7. Data Modeling:

   • Model the data within Power BI by defining relationships between tables and creating calculated columns or measures.

8. Create Visualizations:

   • Build visualizations based on the metrics you've imported. Drag and drop fields onto the report canvas to create charts, tables, or other visual elements.

9. Schedule Data Refresh:
